Jacksonville opened a     public library in 1959, becoming a branch of the Pulaski County Library. A new Jacksonville library was built in 1969 on Main Street. In 1992, the Jacksonville Library was re-named the Esther Dewitt Nixon Library in honor of Mrs. Nixon, who had been the Jacksonville librarian from the library's beginning in 1959 until her retirement in 1986.
